Differentiation in Our Class
In our world today each student is unique in their learning experience and style. Therefore differentiating education for each child is crucial to support their individual learning and growth. Below is information on how differentiation will be implemented in our classroom to meet each students learning needs.
There are many ways that I will be differentiating for your child on a daily basis this year. One way I will be differentiating is through flexible grouping. This means using assessment data to form groups by ability. These groups change regularly based off of our current assessments which informs us of the specific needs of your child.
For each unit in math, I will be giving a pretest over the unit to find out what your child already knows, what he/she has some confusion about, or what is very difficult or new for your child. From this assessment and teacher observation/notes your child will be placed into the appropriate group to receive the instruction that will be created directly for your child! 5th grade also has advanced math classes for students who are more advanced than the average math curriculum.
In reading, I will use the information received from the DRA2 assessment, MAPS assessments, and teacher observations/notes to find out what the needs of all of our students are. The students will be placed into appropriate guided reading groups of 6 or less to meet their individual needs in reading.
Also, at the beginning of the year I will assess the kids in writing using an identical prompt. This will help us determine which traits (ideas and content, organization, word choice, voice, sentence fluency, and conventions) we need to support individual students in.
